In 1972, a group of working mothers banded together to start the area’s first bi-lingual Spanish/English day care in the basement of a Pilsen church. Wanting their children to feel as loved, safe and nurtured as they did at their grandmothers’ houses, the mothers coined the name El Hogar Del Nino, or “the home of the child,” as the name for their new agency.
El Hogar Del Nino today provides early-childhood, pre-school and after-school education for 370 children along with wrap-around support services for the children’s families. Operating from their 30-classroom facility in Pilsen, El Hogar’s team of more than 100 educators and administrators is focused solely on ensuring each student (ranging in age from six months to 12 years old) and their families have the foundation to succeed in life. In order to qualify for admission, families must fall below the U.S. federal poverty line and earn less than $25,750 annually.
For the past five years, Alper Services has handled El Hogar’s employee benefits programs and helped management navigate marketplace complexities to provide their staff with the highest-quality medical, dental, life and vision coverage possible.
“As a home for each of our students, El Holgar takes a holistic look at the needs of each child, as well as their families, to ensure they’re set up to succeed,” explained Mario Perez, El Hogar’s executive director. “As it relates to our benefits programs, we take a similar approach—we want to ensure that for each dollar we spend our team enjoys the best-possible outcome. And since many of our team members have never had employee benefits prior, it’s important that our insurance partner not only designs the most cost-effective program possible, but also helps each team member understand how the benefits work, and why they need them.”
For El Hogar’s most-recent renewal, Alper worked with management to break down the impact of a significant rate increase from their previous carrier, research the costs/benefits of changing plans, and then construct and roll out a new program through a new carrier. Employee Benefits Director, Will Pinn, conducted a series of on-site enrollment events, and brought in Spanish-speaking experts to field questions from employees.
